My journey to venture capital began far from Silicon Valley, in the bluegrass state Kentucky. As the child of immigrant parents, I knew at an early age that Kentucky wasn’t going to be able to satisfy my ambitions. I craved intensity, external energy, and the opportunity to meet like-minded, driven people – a desire that ultimately led me to MIT.
At MIT, I discovered my passion for technology during the dot-com boom. I dived into computer science, fascinated by how bits can alter how atoms are used, and the transformative power of tech in business. This period also sparked my interest in investing, as I watched classmates become millionaires joining and investing in tech startups.
I’ve always been fascinated by the power of data so for my master’s thesis, I delved into bioinformatics and data infrastructure. This experience, working with massive genomic databases and cutting-edge DNA sequencing technology, laid the foundation for my later focus on data and infrastructure investments – though it would take nearly a decade for the industry to catch up to what I was working on in the lab.
After graduation, I joined Akamai Technologies during the depths of the dot-com crash. This baptism by fire taught me invaluable lessons about selling value in tough markets – skills that would prove crucial in my future as a VC. I then joined an early venture-backed security startup, IMlogic, where I helped grow the company from zero to $10 million in revenue before its acquisition by Symantec.
These operational experiences honed my technical skills and business acumen, preparing me for the leap into venture capital in 2006. Over the past 18 years, I've focused exclusively on B2B and enterprise investments, with notable successes including early investments in Box, HubSpot, Gong, RingCentral, Honeycomb, DataStax, and Aircall.
What should founders know about me?
I bring deep domain expertise in B2B, particularly in honing product-market fit and scaling go-to-market. My technical background allows me to engage meaningfully on product and technical discussions, especially in infrastructure, data and AI. I set a high bar, but match it with unwavering loyalty to the founders I back.
Above all, I'm a truth-seeker. I believe in calling things as I see them and embracing hard truths to drive success. My goal is to help founders not just survive, but thrive in the intense world of building transformative companies. If you're looking for a partner who will challenge you, support you, and bring both technical insight and operational experience to the table, let's talk.
